Sampit and Sambas Conflicts

Here Dayak "warriors" eat the leg of a Madurese settler. Due to the graphic nature of the photo, it was censored with difficulty.
In 1930, the Dutch controlled Indonesian government (as well as the independent Indonesian government) mass migrated Madurese to Burneo. This outraged the local Dayak tribes, as well as the Malays. This caused various clashes between the Madurese and the Dayak communities. The most serious ones occurred in 1999 and 2001. In 1999, due to an unknown incident various Malay and Dayak communities attacked the Madurese. Thousands of Madurese were raped and killed by the rioters. The number of Madurese killed were up to 3,000. The Indonesian government did nothing to stop the riots. The Dayak tribes were known as fierce headhunters, but most scholars believed it to have died off. However, since at least 100 corpses were beheaded, it appears that the head-hunting tradition is still practiced by the Dayaks. Another incident occurred in 2001, also with an unknown spark. Several Dayak communities several Madurese communities. Hundreds of Madurese were killed and raped. Thousands of Madurese homes were burned down. As seen with this photo on this post, the Dayaks were known to have eaten several of their victims. Again, various of the Madurese corpses were decapitated. Up to 500 Madurese dead, and 100,000 were left homeless. However, the Indonesian government intervened to control the situation. Later in the year, government troops manged to disperse the Dayaks, but clashes still occurred in the year.
